GDA’s Director of Programs to Safeguard Guide Dog Standards Worldwide

Guide Dogs of America is proud to announce Director of Programs Yvonne Martin has been selected as an International Guide Dog Federation Assessor. The International Guide Dog Federation is a global organization comprised of more than 85 member guide dog organizations, covering 28 countries. IGDF works with member organizations to monitor the standards of the guide dogs that they produce, to raise awareness of visual impairment throughout the world, and share best practices in terms of developing innovative mobility training techniques.

Yvonne MartinMartin is one of nine newly recruited IGDF Assessors. With this recruitment, there is a total of 27 Assessors on the team. Martin will assess required organizations to determine IGDF standards are met. She will provide verbal and written reports of each assessment and recommend if an organization should receive or maintain IGDF membership. Evaluation areas include:

  • Guide dog programs’ applicant selection process
  • All aspects of the breeding, raising, veterinary, and kennel care
  • The processes of administration, buildings, and transportation
  • The training and treatment of guide dogs
  • Instruction and follow up of the guide dog teams

An IGDF Assessor must be a qualified guide dog instructor with a minimum of 10 years of experience working within an IGDF member school.

Martin brings 15 years of experience at GDA to her current position as director of programs. Martin is familiar with every department, the people, and our organization’s processes. She has been a puppy raiser and GDA’s Director of Canine Development.

During her IGDF Assessor training in 2016, Martin will evaluate the Croatian Guide Dog and Mobility Association in Croatia along with a guide dog school in Finland. To learn more about IGDF, visit
