Auditorium Named For Beloved GDA Supporter Fran Granger

More than 350 guests joined Guide Dogs of America President Russell A. Gittlen July 29 for the dedication of the Fran Granger Auditorium on GDA’s campus in Sylmar, Calif. Named in memory of GDA board member J. Weldon Granger’s beloved wife of 46 years, the auditorium is located at the heart of GDA’s visitor and education center.

Donor Spotlight: Two Very Special Ladies and a Very Special Gift

A daughter wanted to fulfill her mother’s wishes, and Guide Dogs of America was honored to be the recipient of a gift of more than $1 million. The daughter made the gift anonymously in loving memory of her mother.

Donor Spotlight: Her Thrift Became Sizable Gift to GDA

Even as a young girl, Patricia “Pat” Custer was a dog lover. It was a wonderful surprise that she left her estate of more than $1 million to Guide Dogs of America. Those who knew Custer were aware of her thriftiness, but all were amazed by the large a donation she gifted to GDA.

Custer began her career as a secretary at NBC in Hollywood, Calif. In 1973, she became the bookkeeper for the newly formed Corporate Productions Inc. (CPI) and stayed with the company the rest of her career.

Donor Spotlight – Partners Planning in Advance

Partners in Trust Kevin and Cindy Cassady knew Guide Dogs of America was a special place the first time they attended an Open House on the GDA campus. That first visit led to the couple attending numerous fundraising events for the school. Eventually, they went from fundraising participants to volunteering at the events. Ultimately, they decided that giving their time was not enough. In 2004, the Cassadys started making donations to the school and, in 2009, they ensured that they would leave a future gift to continue their support of the school by becoming Partners in Trust.

Donor Spotlight – Donor’s Support of GDA is a Hole in One

Avid golfer Joleen Janssen first became familiar with Guide Dogs of America when she played in a GDA golf tournament. She won the tournament several times, but it’s GDA that came out the big winner when Janssen decided to include GDA in her planned giving and become a Partner in Trust.

In loving memory, daughter designates GDA in her inheritance

Lester Schneck was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for more than 50 years. According to his daughter Claire, he was proud to be a part of the organization that founded Guide Dogs of America. Through the years, as he read the union’s newsletter, he would comment to her about the fundraising events the local unions held to benefit GDA.

William And Betty Schertle Introduce New Generation To GDA

When Betty Schertle passed away last year, the trust that she and her husband William (Bill) had drawn up years earlier was read. In the trust, the couple named five charities to be recipients of a portion of their estate, among them was Guide Dogs of America.

Edith HunioFor Edith and Robert Hunio, all it took was attending just one graduation for them to know they wanted to support Guide Dogs of America and name the school in their trust. The Hunios were introduced to GDA by their friends in 1992 and have been Partners in Trust ever since.
