At Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC), we believe that every great service dog journey begins with a dedicated puppy raiser. Recently, 11 high school students in Utah took their first steps in that journey—and it all started in a classroom.
A Unique High School Program Teaches Students to Raise Future Service Dogs
After eight months of preparation, our team traveled to Payson High School to deliver a very special group of puppies to their new raisers. These students—juniors and seniors enrolled in an FFA (Future Farmers of America) class—are now part of a hands-on educational program that includes raising future guide and service dogs as part of the curriculum.
Meet the Puppies from the H, I, J, K, and N Litters
The puppies from the H, I, J, K, and N litters will spend the next year learning the basics of obedience, care, and socialization. As they grow, they’ll be nurtured by students who are gaining firsthand experience in animal training, personal responsibility, and the power of selfless service.
Teaching Responsibility, Compassion, and Career Exploration
While this FFA class wasn’t originally created to include puppy raising, it’s already opening new doors for the students involved. Many are discovering a passion for working with animals, while others are learning how meaningful it is to help others. These young adults are developing life skills, exploring new career paths, and seeing how one small act—raising a puppy—can have a ripple effect of impact.
With the Right Support, Anyone Can Be a Puppy Raiser
This program is a powerful reminder that puppy raisers come from all walks of life. With proper support and guidance, even high school students can help raise confident, well-socialized dogs that will one day become life-changing partners to individuals who are blind/visually impaired, veterans with PTSD, or children with autism.
